They had some fine bands playing at the Primavera Al Parc (Primavera in the Park) event early Saturday afternoon, but I chose to get some extra sleep instead, as I assumed some shut-eye would benefit me in the long run. Early that afternoon I did meet one of the guys I was sharing a hostel room with, as he was also attending the festival. His name was Chris and was from Winnipeg—super nice guy. He left early, but I waited until 2:30 to awaken and leave the confines of the hostel room.

Upon arriving near the festival site, I thought it best to grab something to eat. The festival offered lots of tasty food: crepes, sandwiches, Thai food, fries, pizza cones, and more, but it was all slightly expensive. The beer was fairly pricey too, but bottled water was super cheap at least. There was a mall right next to the festival site, but as I was walking past the hotel on the way to the mall, I noticed a familiar face…a certain Steve Albini.

He was across the street trying to hail a cab, but then ran across to try and catch one driving in the opposite dirction—this allowed me to walk directly past him. “Hey man, amazing show last night,” I nervously said.

“Thanks. Hey, you know any secrets to hailing a cab around here?”

“Oh, no, sorry. Actually I tried getting a taxi last night after the festival, but ended up having to walk back to my hostel.”

“Oh…bummer.” And with that, my conversation with Steve Albini was over. Yeah, I kind of blew it, but I hope he found a cab…poor guy.

I grabbed a pretty tasty sandwich at a deli in the mall, and upon leaving, I ran into yet another indie rock legend: Peter Prescott, the drummer for Mission of Burma. I saw him walking toward me in enough of time to develop the courage to tell him that he played an awesome show the first night, but that was actually a lie—I didn’t see Mission of Burma—it was some organizer’s bright idea to place their slot at the same time as Pavement’s. Anyways, he thanked me, and asked if I knew of any good places to eat around here. I simply recommended him the sandwich joint, reached into my bag, and handed him a digital download of the Horse or Cycle album, haha. He thanked me for the recommendation and the download card, and we were on our seperate ways. I should really offer advice to indie rockers more often.

This was to be the biggest day with the most bands to cram in. Unfortunately I had to miss some musicians throughout the festival who I wanted to see due to time slots overlapping with each other, artists like Van Dyke Parks, Mission of Burma, The Charlatans, Low, Circulatory System, and Chrome Hoof, but oh well. Likewise, there were a few bands throughout the festival that I wasn’t expecting to see, but I caught quick glimpses of: Spoon, Pet Shop Boys, Beach House, etc.

Anyways, it was approaching 16.00, and it was time for the first event of the day.

Because I haven’t included this yet, I thought it be appropriate to post a map of the festival grounds, to get a better idea of the general setting:

ODDSAC

My day started in the Auditorium again for the Spain premiere of ‘ODDSAC,’ the Animal Collective film. I had no clue what to expect—but I was happy to catch another event inside the spectacular Auditorium. The film’s director made his introduction with a warning that this film WILL mess up our senses and possibly hurt our brains for the rest of the day—sweet, I’m ok with that!

The film was not a documentary like I was sort of expecting—instead it truly was a “visual album,” and it was certainly weird as all hell. Imagine if David Lynch directed an opera that took place in the middle of an acid trip, and that’s somewhat what this movie was like. I would not recommend one watch it at home, as it would be pretty boring, BUT in the Auditorium with the giant screen and BLASTING sound system, it was a great way to pass the hour.

Lidia Dumont

I left the confines of the Auditorium, and walked back to the festival grounds. It was the most beautiful day yet, and people were starting to trickle in. I decided to make this nice video to comment on the grand European Music Festival urination experience:

The first performer of the day was Lidia Damunt on the Pitchfork stage. She sang folky songs mixed with electronics (provided by her 2-man backup band)—a few super catchy songs too. I also enjoyed her cape.

The Psychic Paramount

After chilling and talking to a few people, I ventured to the ATP stage where The Psychic Paramount were about to begin. They were a loud, noisy, instrumental band. Very happy I caught their set—I was getting lucky at finding new bands that I hadn’t planned on catching. The crowd slowly gathered in as soon as the ruckus started.

Real Estate

I hadn’t heard Real Estate’s music yet, but it was good—nothing too special; the melodies reminded me of early REM. I caught probably half of their set at the Pitchfork stage, but I believe some of the band members were watching The Clean’s set next to me later on in the day (none asked me for any sandwich or taxi recommendations or anything).

Dr. Dog

The day was starting out fairly calm. I made my way to the main stage to catch just a bit of Dr. Dog’s set. I’ve never been a huge fan of this band (seriously the worst band name ever), but a lot of my friends are, so I figured I’d check them out, and it was pretty decent. They put on a good show, but I still only stayed for about fifteen minutes.

Micheal Rother and Friends

Things were just about to get real. Michael Rother (Neu!, Harmonia, La Dusseldorf) was playing Neu’s music along with Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Aaron Mullen (Tall Firs)….pretty incredible! Everything certainly had a classic krautrock vibe, and it was definitely a dream come true for any Neu! or Harmonia fans (like myself). I couldn’t stay for the entire set though, as today’s main attraction was just a stage away.

The Clean

I sprinted over to the Vice stage from Michael Rother’s set, and was aghast to hardly see anyone waiting for the band to walk on–where are the REAL indie music fans?? Do they know how many bands wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for these guys?? Once they started playing though, the young crowd slowly hovered over.

Out of the many bands performing this week, I was the most excited for New Zealand’s The Clean…mainly because I assumed it would be the only time I’d ever get to experience them live. They’re a legendary live band, and I know why….their songs were loose but driving—repetitious yet powerful—basically a perfect live band. They played some of my favorites, including “Outside the Cage” and an epic version of “Point that Thing Somewhere Else.”

The most random part of the set came when someone up near the front started violently vomiting, and and nobody in the band even acknowledged it. Too much early-day drinking I guess…

I’ve been a huge Clean fan for years, and it was certainly worth the wait to finally see them!

Nana Grizol

I was very much hoping that the climax of the evening didn’t already happen too early with the Clean, but NO WORRIES—there was still MUCH left, starting with Nana Grizol. I needed to get my Elephant 6 kick for the week after missing Circulatory System earlier, and I’ve wanted to catch Nana Grizol’s live show for a long time.

They were playing at one of the larger stages, which was AWESOME. The band members were super excited to be playing in front of such a big crowd (when some members weren’t playing, they could be seen running to the back of the stage and taking pictures of everyone). I also loved that everyone onstage had a smile on their face the whole time—they looked like a bunch of friends having fun on stage, which is how it should be! I’d gladly join Nana Grizol!! (Plus I’m a big fan of Theo Hilton’s songwriting—definitely one of the best lyricists at the festival.)

The Slits

I headed over to the Pitchfork stage to catch some of The Slits’ set. It was…interesting. Basically I think the lead singer has completely lost her mind—even the audience didn’t know what to think. An especially memorable moment was when she decided to change clothes right in the middle of the set…on stage. I want to say it was like watching a train wreck, but the band was all really talented at least…the music was definitely on par and fun.

They played some older songs from ‘Cut,’ which was rad for me, as that’s the only Slits album I have. If anything, it was certainly an entertaining show, and props to the lead singer for growing her hair out.

Polvo

I grabbed an oh-so-quick bite to eat before Polvo’s set at the ATP stage. I started talking to this guy about the day so far, and he highly recommended me catch The Drums in a bit at the Vice Stage. I agreed to catch their set, but first, I absolutely needed to see some of Polvo’s set. I easily made it to the front row for half of their set, which was (predictably) rockin’, before heading over to catch The Drums. Not much else to say about Polvo except that they rock.

The Drums

Before you say anything, I’m clearly aware that The Drums are slowly becoming the next Urban Outfitters band (look out Vampire Weekend). I made it to their show during the first song, and my first impression was that the singer’s stage antics are just Ian Curtis-ripoff moves. After only three minutes though, I was completely sold (if anything, their antics reminded me of an overly-flamboyant Ian Curtis).

They were surprisingly tight and offered VERY good songs. I already had their EP, so I recognized one or two tunes, as did the crowd—EVERYONE was going nuts during their set. Again, it’s great to see both the band and the audience enjoying themselves at a show.

Matt & Kim

I decided that (for the first time this festival) I was just going to wait at a specific stage until the next band started…this was a mistake—as it took forever for the most minimal band setup of the festival to start, as the stage crew desperately struggled to hook up Matt’s keyboard output to his amp—quite ridiculous (see picture—-caption: “how many stage crew members does it take to hook up a keyboard?”).

So Matt & Kim started slightly late, but no worries, as they tore through the most sporadic, humbling, and crazy set of the evening. Mixing cover songs, keyboard jams, stage diving, sing-a-longs, and other theatrical antics into a 35-minute set, Matt & Kim captivated the audience like no other performers I’ve seen in a long time. They played “Daylight,” AND that song where they walk around naked in the video, so it was a totally solid set!! They were also genuinely happy to perform in front of the large crowd, and I was right near the front, so I happily got to be part of the madness. Like many other bands at the festival, they’re quite the lookers too—

Built to Spill

As much as I love Built to Spill, I’ve been one to criticize their live show. I’ve been one to make jokes about their unnecessary endless guitar jamming (it is indeed unnecessary and it feels endless), and I’ve also been one to critique their lack of stage presence (which wasn’t as bad as I first thought). While I can be overly critical, I must admit that when Doug Martsch broke into a solo version of “Twin Falls,” and then the band kicked into “Carry the Zero,” my eyes held back a few tears.

The nostalgia hit me like a bag of bricks—both songs brought me back to high school. A time when I wasn’t depressed to wake up every morning knowing that I’ll be heading to a job I despise. A time when I didn’t hear words like “marriages” and “long-term relationships,” and instead, a “crush” meant more than anything, because hey, you have your whole life ahead of you for love. A time when I hung out with friends all day, played guitar and dreamed about playing in a band by night, and all together, felt passionate about everything. Those songs brought those feelings back, and it hit me hard, and it felt “right”—therefore, I believe I can’t critique Built to Spill’s live show to such a high degree. Yeah, it was an emotional evening—at least I was somewhat able to catch a little bit of video:

Sunny Day Real Estate

Dammit. If Built to Spill didn’t get me overly-emotional enough, Sunny Day Real Estate was going to do the trick. Rightfully so…they were a prime soundtrack to my teenage years. They are, to this day, one of the only bands I can ever call “emo” without feeling any such guilt for using that word.

Their live show was everything I wanted it to be, and more. I was talking earlier in the day about bands with my hostel roommate, and he proudly exclaimed that out of all the bands in the world, Sunny Day Real Estate was the one band he’s always dreamed of seeing. Even though I didn’t get a chance to talk to him after this night of music, I know that he HAD to be satisfied with their set. A little bit from every album, and they played all the songs you’d want them to play. OK…enough emo for one blog entry.

Gary Numan

Now for a completely change of pace. I’ve had Gary Numan albums on vinyl since I was in high school, so it was refreshing to see him live with his band. He definitely takes a few cues from Trent Reznor, but still has that individual style that only he can sell. I didn’t stay for all of his set, but it was still good, albeit it, a definite change of pace (I did in fact catch a few goths in the crowd).

Later in the night, during HEALTH’s set, I noticed Numan watching the set while sipping on a can of Coke. I mentioned that he played a “great set,” we exchanged a few words, and I handed him the Horse or Cycle album. He seemed genuinely gracious, and even if he doesn’t do anything with it (I’m sure he immediately through the card on the ground), I love the idea that Gary Numan has (had) access to the Horse or Cycle album.

Liquid Liquid

A major reason I left the Gary Numan set was because Liquid Liquid was starting their set at the ATP stage…and boy am I happy that I left!

Never…NEVER in my life have I enjoyed dancing so much as when Liquid Liquid were playing…that’s a big deal folks!!! If you’re not familiar, Liquid Liquid were active in New York from 1980-1983. They don’t have too many recordings, but their songs are basically pure rhythm. Only the bass guitar, marimba, and the call/response-like vocals have any sort of melody happening. Their set was definitely one of the three best sets of the festival for me. FUN!!!!!!

Lee “Scratch” Perry

I sort of felt at the time that Liquid Liquid were going to be the climax of the evening, so I needed an act to help come down off my natural high—enter Lee “Scratch” Perry, the “godfather” of reggae (apparently).

He was good—pretty much sounded like I thought he would. I sat on the ground for a lot of his set and chilled (my legs were sore and oh so tired). I’m not a huge reggae fan, but I definitely preferred his music over the theatrics of the Pet Shop Boys that were happening on the main stage (it’s not that I dislike the Pet Shop Boys’ music, I just wasn’t in the mood for the huge crowd). It was going on 2 AM, but no worries—there was more!!!

Ben Frost

After getting some rest, some reggae, some Red Bull, and a beer, I felt it best to wonder around until Orbital’s 3 AM set. Enter Ben Frost. He had a massive rig of amps behind a table of gadgets on the ATP stage. A guitar dangled around his neck as he made some fierce noise for over a half hour. It was actually perfect for the moment, though the audience slowly started to dwindle. The pace of the night had risen crazier and crazier until the “Scratch” Perry/Ben Frost hour…but nowgoogl things were about to get crazier again…

The Almighty Defenders

I had some more time to kill before Orbital’s set started, so I caught some of the Almighty Defenders’ set. I wasn’t familiar with their music, but was intrigued by their costumes/theatrics onstage (there were indeed some Bible verses recited). Suffice to say, the music wasn’t anything too original, or good for that matter, but they were an easy way to kill 15 minutes while waiting for one of the most-anticipated artists of the weekend to make their way to the stage.

Orbital

It’s come to this! Orbital were probably the first “techno” groups that ever graced my ears—and no doubt, one of the best. Known for their live improv during sets (a rarity in a lot of electronic music), they’ve been around since 1989 and helped give the British techno scene importance in the world of music.

Their set opened in darkness with the intro to one of their first singles swirling through the speakers as the two masterminds walked onto the stage: “Daddy?” “Yes son?” “What does regret mean?” “Well son, a funny thing about regret is, it’s better to regret something you have done than something you haven’t done. And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure to tell her….SATAN, SATAN, SATAN, SATAN“

They ripped into their set as both the stage lighting and concert goers went crazy. They rightfully attracted a HUGE crowd, and played an incredible, unpredictable set. I thought it was going to be slightly longer, but I could no longer dance—I was physically and mentally exhausted. I walked away, but instead of walking towards the exit, I still had one more band to catch before the end of the night.

HEALTH

I was anticipating HEALTH’s set, and they didn’t let me down. There was still a decent crowd at the Vice Stage (the stage the furthest from the Entrance/Exit), but they killed it. Lots of dancey beats, tribal drumming, dreamy vocals, and thick noise…a satisfying way to end the festival.

I left the site after 4AM feeling a little empty. Not because the past three days were unsatisfying experiences in any way, but because I knew that I wouldn’t be awakening tomorrow afternoon  to catch another incredible night of music. I decided that I’ll have to do my best to make this journey again next year. I had probably the greatest three nights of music of my life and yearned for more. There was another small Primavera show the very next day in one of Barcelona’s many parks, but it still wasn’t the same. The bar has been set, and it’s going to be very difficult to raise it in any way. Thanks much for reading!!!!

I woke up in my hostel bed around 10 AM (that only equals about 4 hours of sleep), showered, packed, and made my way to my other hostel (I wanted to stay someplace closer to the festival, but they didn’t have available beds my first two nights in Barcelona). From my new hostel location, I took a quick nap and made my way to the festival by tram around 3 PM, as the first show started at 4.

Owen Pallett

Owen Pallett was performing in the Auditorium, which was a beautiful, futuristic building. Waiting in the massive queue, I felt like I was in line for a Disney World attraction in Tomorrowland. Walking in, it sounded like a symphony was performing, whereas it was simply Pallett and his violin/loop rig. When I finally made it inside, the 3,200 was filled to capacity, but I managed to find a seat in the dark near the stage. His performance was incredible—-rightly deserving the standing ovation he received. Certainly a quiet start with what was about to be a hectically loud evening.

Wild Honey

I wasn’t too familiar with Wild Honey’s music, but they sounded like the most-appealing band playing at 17.00, so I checked out their super-welcoming set. Seven people onstage backed lead songwriter Guillermo Farré, who hails from Madrid, Spain. Very poppy, acoustic-driven music…wish I would’ve gotten some video.

Cuerpos

There was a small stage near the entrance that was reserved for bands from Barcelona, Madrid, and the surrounding areas. I caught Cuerpos, and what attracted me over to the stage was the fact that they sounded like a spanish, shoegazy Stereolab! I highly recommend you check out their MySpace page…really good stuff!!

The New Pornographers

Opening the main stage for the day was the New Pornographers. This was the third time seeing them, and it still sounded great! Their set had a mix of old and new (the tunes from the new album sounded fantastic live). My only complaints were that they had some Neko Case-wannabe chick singing backing vocals, which didn’t really add anything, and, of course, the absence of Dan Bejar didn’t help things.

The best part of their set was their drummer though…he chugged a beer during any pause in the music and never lost a beat (he even had time to flip drumsticks and steal the keyboard players’ beers in-between songs). Thus by the end of the set, he was completely hammered—awesome shenanigans!

Best Coast

Best Coast is another band who Pitchfork has a permanent boner for (hence they were also playing the Pitchfork stage). They have one song that I really like (‘The Sun was High’), which is mixtape worthy, but the rest of the set was only ok…nothing too special, so I only watched about 20 minutes and then moved on.

Nueva Vulcano

These guys drew a pretty huge crowd at the Ray Ban stage, so I figured they must be pretty big in Spain (everyone was singing along). What can I say about their set…they were really, really fun–a definite surprise of the day! They reminded me of a Spanish Jawbox or Superchunk, and were super lively on stage. I became an instant fan during their set, and wished I knew the words so I could sing along with everyone else. (I also appreciate any band with a permanent vibraphone player).

Boat Beam

I needed to sit down for a bit. I strolled over to the Adidas Originals stage and listened to Boat Beam while relaxing in front of the ocean. I noticed a few girls who I shared my new hostel room with, and found out that they were from Los Angeles. We talked for a little while, and they all had fantastic taste in music. They were planning on hanging out in Barcelona only until the festival was over, while I was planning on chilling for a few extra days.

Anyways, Boat Beam were really good too!

Beak>

I hadn’t heard Beak>’s music, but was super excited to experience it as a Beak> virgin as I stood waiting in front of the ATP stage. They’re not a “side-project,” but their Geoff Barrow’s other band who isn’t Portishead. They had a definite krautrock vibe with minimal vocals and a motorik drum beat. The guitarist/keyboardist was also probably the raddest person at the festival—he perfected the cigarette-in-the-mouth-while-playing look.

Condo Fucks

Legendary indie rockers Yo La Tengo played their set as the Condo Fucks, a noisy, feedback-heavy garage rock band that dones nothing but covers. If you took the most exciting aspects of a Yo La Tengo set and compressed them into a 45-minute mindfuck, that’s sorta what this sounded like. They covered everything from the Troggs to Black Flag to the Electric Eels. This is the third time seeing Yo La Tengo, and it was definitely the most fun!

CoCoRosie

It takes a lot for me to admit that a band is really “weird,” but CoCoRosie totally falls into that category. They were sort of going for a Bjork-sound, but the songs just didn’t really do anything for me. I watched for about 15 minutes, until I had to leave, as there were more important matters at stake…

Wire

What can I really say about Wire?? One of the best shows I’ve ever seen? Yeah, pretty close. They expectedly played a lot of newer songs, but including ‘The 15th’ and ‘Pink Flag’ in their set was more than enough for me. Plus there was a pretty incredible mosh pit right up front where I was at (see video).

They were called back out for a legit encore, and ended the set with the Minor Threat version of ’12XU.’ Being in the middle of a mosh pit with Wire blazing through ’12XU’ is one thing I can cross off my list of “Things I wish to Experience in my Life.” Plus me and the person standing next to me were flirting with each other through the whole show…quite unexpected for a Wire show.

Wilco

I needed to take a breather after my Wire experience, so I troded over to the main stage to catch some of Wilco’s set. Granted I was pretty far away, I still wasn’t able to really get into it. Out of the 4 or 5 songs I caught, I only recognized 2 of them (and one was from ‘Sky Blue Sky…’ so enough said!). I recorded some Nels Cline/Jeff Tweedy soloing, as that was probably the most interesting part of the set.

I unfortunately have to report that Wilco has lost it. I still dig 3 or 4 of their older albums, but that freshness has diminished from their set. Oh well…that was really the only disappointment of the evening.

Panda Bear

Don’t trust the Vice stage crew with any projections/visuals. They were messing up Moderat’s visuals the night before, and they weren’t even able to get the projectors to work for Panda Bear’s set. This caused him to walk out onstage and perform the one-man show with no visuals. This admittedly made it initially difficult to get into his set, but soon enough, one the noise diminished and melodies rose from the music, his new tunes became easy to digest. He has some beautiful new songs up his sleeve.

I watched over half of the set, but then had to run over to the ATP stage for some Shellac…

Shellac

I stood front row in front of an empty microphone when Steve Albini walked out, took off his jump suit, picked up his guitar, and launched into “Prayer to God.” Todd Trainer and Bob Weston added in, and the crowd in-front went WILD. You have to figure that a song with the refrain, “kill him, just fucking kill him” is going to bring out some raw emotion. After at least three or four songs, I eventually got elbowed hard in the jaw, and decided to stand back a little further in order to recover.

The band was TIGHT AS HELL, and the rowdy Spanish crowd ADORED them. Easily one of the best performances of the festival, which I later expressed to Albini (more on that later).

Pixies

Running from the Shellac show to catch the start of the Pixies set, I passed the Ray-Ban stage where Marc Almond was performing. I hadn’t realized that he was the lead singer of Soft Cell until he broke out into ‘Tainted Love’ right as I was passing the stage. EVERYONE around me, whether they were headed toward the Pixies stage, or watching Almond, or just hanging out got up and started singing and dancing…it was a great moment. I still continued to the San Miguel stage, where a huge crowd had already built up.

The Pixies went on and launched into a massive set. Frank Black certainly caused a distraction by sporting a tight black shirt, as every time he appeared on the big screen, I chucked while thinking, “wow, that man has some big tits.” Either way, they played many, many favorites of mine, including ‘Alec Eiffel,’ ‘River Euphrates,’ and ‘Allison.’ I started in the center of the crowd, but after leaving to grab a beer, I walked all the way to the very back to enjoy their set from the grassy hill.

They are a band I grew up with, so it was nostalgic hearing all of these songs, plus Kim Deal is certainly a musical hero of mine. It was great to feel the crowd’s energy, but I still left after ‘Broken Face,’ as I wanted to catch Major Lazer.

Major Lazer

I was weary on leaving the Pixies set to catch Major Lazer, but when I got to the Pitchfork stage, by god, what a party! Half-naked dancers, crazy video projections, a guy in a sailor’s outfit who runs on stage and throws inflatable alligators into the crowd, an energetic (to say the least) MC, and lots and lots of dancing.

Diplo’s DJ-ing skills were also awesome—transitioning from “Rude Boy” to “Say It Ain’t So” by Weezer was a sweet way to end the set.

Yeasayer

It was 2:30, and I was certainly getting tired. I still wanted to catch Yeasayer’s set at the Vice Stage (luckily they weren’t using any video). They were good—the lead singer had some annoying negative words to say about the Ray-Ban sunglasses ads sporting the stage, but all-together they had a super danceable set and the crowd was still on their feet by the end.

The Bloody Betroots Death Crew 77

I hadn’t heard  these guys, but I knew that lots of dancing would be involved. Unfortunately, I could hardly even move my feet. I was tired, my body was ached, so I chose to enjoy their set from the back steps/seats–still, a perfect view. The Italian “band” switched between harsh electronic beats and more rock-oriented song structures. All in all, I really dug their set, not to mention their Venom masks. They also covered ‘New Noise’ by Refused, which was a perfect way to end the night for me.

I had to leave—too tired to wait for Diplo’s set like I wished. The problem was that the subway wasn’t operating again until 5, and it was 4. I was hoping to maybe run into someone from my hostel, but no luck. I was also hoping to catch a taxi, but again, no luck—EVERYONE was trying to catch a taxi. I didn’t want to catch a bus, as I don’t know the bus routes, and it being night, I didn’t even know what the area around the hostel looked like.

I ended up having to walk back to my hostel. Granted it was only maybe a 30 minute walk, I was incredibly tired. Luckily there was a big group of us walking, so at least I wasn’t by myself. Oh well. I finally made it to my room, took a quick shower, and slept until 1 or so. Another incredible evening—one more to go!

…and now onto the actual bands (in order)

Though the service in your restaurants is always hospitable, I unfortunately write to you with a minor issue that took place this past Friday during the lunch hour.

These commercials and advertisements are grounded in a slogan that personifies our modern technology, and I think it’s safe to say that this is the first step to our eventual war with the machines—James Cameron couldn’t have written it any better.

I’m personally not a “MAC” or a “PC.” I’m ME. Though I somewhat prefer one over the other, I refuse to identify myself as any multi-billion dollar company’s product. Both are corporations solely after my money (and soon—my soul). Soon we won’t identify ourselves as computer brands—the computers will identify themselves as us. Shit, they’re already smarter than us! For example

- A GPS knows its way around my neighborhood better than I do.
- Microsoft Word can spell better than I can.
- Facebook has millions more friends than I have.
- Medical computer technology can save more lives than doctors can.
- Computerized security systems can protect more people than the police can.
- E-mails deliver messages faster than any postal worker.

As one can see, technology is far superior to any human being. Technology will surely rule the world in a few hundred years, and who is to blame? Let’s start with Mr. Steve Paul Jobs.

Steve Jobs has a lot of nerve actually. I’ll be the first to say that Wall-E was probably the best cinematic experience 2009 had to offer, but the fact that Pixar, a company so closely aligned with both Disney and Apple, had the nerve to portray our future as a world where technological breakthroughs allow us to sit on our fat asses and do nothing, while the major company’s products do the work for us, and…wait…hey that sounds like us now! Disney, Apple, IBM, GM, and a plentiful of other major corporations provide the means to shield ourselves from the outside world while the gadgets and gizmos hypnotize us. I walk onto the public bus and see businessmen diligently working via their Blackberries (thanks to John McCain!). College students toddle around campuses ignoring their surroundings thanks to the newly over hyped iPhones. iPods grace the ears of high schoolers, thereby shielding them from participating in the outside world.

The humans in the Wall-E movie are hyperbolic manifestations of us. We allow technology to do everything for us. Soon we’ll all be stupid idiots who sit around, smoke weed (or have the machines smoke it for us), and watch television all day. The only ones profiting will be those programmers at the top of the work chain. Depressing, I know. We must begin to take the first steps to prevent these unfortunate circumstances. Step #1: Recognizing that Wall-E is a propaganda film in every way that Triumph of the Will was. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Just look at her design. She looks like Steve Jobs’ wet dream.
